NEWS & NOTES

CARD To Sponsor Teen Sexuality Weekends

Communities Advocating Responsible Decisions (CARD) will be sponsoring Teen Sexuality weekends in St. Marys and New Bremen in March. The Teen Sexuality weekends will be an extension of the biannual sexuality programs, which have been sponsored by local churches since 1986.

CARD is a not-for-profit organization with funds administered through the St. Marys Community Foundation. The organization’s mission is to “educate young people to make good healthy decisions regarding alcohol, drugs and sex by challenging them to understand the values of personal responsibility, self-discipline and character.

“This program is a natural fit for our organization,” said CARD Vice President Jeff Ginter. “The format of the program will be basically the same as in previous years. There are a few changes designed to get more of the area youth involved.”

Dates for the Teen Sexuality programs will be March 3 and 4 at the Faith Alliance Church in New Bremen; and March 10-11, at the Wayne Street United Methodist Church in St. Marys. The program is designed for any male or female student currently in grades 6-8 and their parents.

The program follows the book “Sex Has a Price Tag” by nationally-known abstinence speaker Pam Stenzel, and includes discussions about sexuality, spirituality and self respect.

The format for both weekends is a 6-9 p.m. session on Friday, which will include a super and evening designed for both the youth and parents. The Saturday sessions include a 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. session for youth only and 2-5 p.m. conclusion for youth and parents.

“Interaction with parents is a big part of the weekend,” Ginter said. “Students will be divided up into groups that will be led by adult volunteers. The program will include discussions with health professionals, and we’re hoping to organize a panel of teen parents for a discussion.”

Adult volunteers are needed for the program, which will allow the inclusion of more students. There will be a leaders training session Feb. 25. Anyone interested is encouraged to contact Jeff Ginter at 419-394-3754. Space for the programs may be limited so anyone interested is encouraged to sign up as soon as possible. To register for the New Bremen program, contact Brenda Cook (419-629-0209) or Robin Goettmoeller (419-629-3126). To register for the St. Marys program contact Dave Stilwell (419-394-8874) or Jeff Ginter (419-394-3754).
