Glory Days
"Blues Revue"

Glory Days actually had its beginnings in 1970. The original members all started rockin' in either the Dean Axe basement or the Jeff Gottschalk basement, bellowing out the tunes we grew up with by the Who, Three Dog Night, Grand Funk Railroad and Steppenwolf. Dean started out as the drummer, with Jeff Gottschalk on organ, Randy Speckman on bass, Dan Uhlenhake on guitar and Rick Mallory singing lead vocal. Dean decided to play Roughrider football and dropped out making way for St. Marys residents Roger Dysert and then Bruce Bubp Jr. to take over drum duties. Jeff Gottschalk switched bands with keyboardist Jeff Hausmann who was playing with local talents Mike Hardin, Jeff Winget and the late, great Jeff Cathcart. In 1973, Bruce Junior left to join Hardin and buddies so the boys looked to the East in Wapakoneta and found Kim Carter to fulfill the promises of super stick swingin'. The boys were known as Piece of Mind and later Red Death. They rocked St. Marys all during their high school years from 1970 to 1974.

Talk of a reunion went round and round for 23 years. Finally in the fall of 1996, Brian Webster contacted Rick Mallory about the upcoming MHS class of '74 25th reunion, and the rest is history. The guys caught the big bad bug all over again and have been getting out for nearly four years. Glory Days has been all over the area bowling over festivals, dances and hineygates with their flat out fun loving style. They have also opened shows for such notables as 1964, the Beatles tribute band, and the Danger Brothers. Fun? ABSOLUTELY! Crazy? YOU BET! It's always oldies and classic rock with an especially hard edge with plenty of laughs and audience participation along the way! Here's the guys and their vast and wacky background in the greatest music ever written - 60's and 70's rock and roll!

RICK MALLORY - Lead Vocals, guitar
Ricko, with his golden tenor-baritone voice and wiseguy antics will put you in your place. Expect an embarrassing personal greeting from him or a one-of-a-kind surprise wardrobe feature when he turns his back to you. Rick has insured his voice for a million bucks. The deer are very thankful. Once upon a time he was too shy to sing Karouke, but he learned to love the sight of women swooning. Rick likes to dine on chicken and sing Irish folk songs in the shower, and on the tops of utility poles.

DAN UHLENHAKE - Lead Guitar, back vocals
Getting inspiration since childhood from blues greats like Johnny Winter, Dan only likes heavy Gibson and Kramit guitars that hold notes so long he can make out his taxes. He loves to play, and duck walk like Chuck Berry (although he can't staighten up very fast) as he trades jabs and harmonies with Rick and Dean. Dan likes to tend bar in his basement while guests admire old Red Death memorabilia and stare in disbelief at the hair Dan had, and the unspeakable splendor of the Glory Days Wall of Shame.

KIM CARTER - Drums, back vocals
Kim was the last and notably the finest of the Red Death era drummers. His killer snare and swing type rolls have everybody moving to the Glory Days rock and roll style. With a drum kit the size of the Goodyear blimp, he smiles gleefully as he counts us into classic after classic, showing off the fact that he can count to 4. Besides counting, Kim enjoys his massive music collection, electronic toys and is crazy about the Cleveland Browns.

RANDY SPECKMAN - Bass Guitar, back vocals
Randy tends to his Fender basses like Picasso tended to his art. Randy can find anything on his fretboard to carry any song anywhere - sometimes over a cliff. Included in his palette is a love for Country Music - which we constantly suppress - and a secret desire to sing more, which he denies. Neurotic to the end, he once was mooned by Dean to ease his nerves. He's never recovered from it.

JEFF GOTTSCHALK - Keyboards, back vocals
Jeff has not one but two Roland keyboards. He even plays both at the same time sometimes! His repetoire is endless from Beethoven to the sounds of an Apache helicopter. His favorite is a wailing siren he uses for REO's "Ridin' the Storm Out" to whip the audience into a frenzy. Jeff also helps arrange the music for the annual appearance of the Glory Days Horns. Jeff likes to forget about rehearsals and he likes to make his own wine in the Gottschalk Vineyard - which explains his memory lapses.

DEAN AXE - Guitar, vocals, harmonica
Since coming to his senses years ago, Dean took up the guitar. Dean's tenor voice is the perfect compliment to complete the 3 part harmonies in the Glory Days arsenal. More than anything else, Dean loves to entertain. Audiences are enchanted with his constant barrage of comments. The most fun loving guy in the universe, Dean refuses to be restrained - we tried once or twice but failed. When not whipping on his electric guitars, Dean can be found relaxing with an acoustic guitar serenading the fish and scaring the boaters of Grand Lake St. Marys.

MARK WENDEL - Sound Engineer, Guitar
Mark's primary job in Glory Days is Sound Reinforcement, sitting at the 24 channel board putting out a great mix. However, when the sound system is supplied at certain venues, we actually let him come up and play guitar. Mark also custom builds electric guitars. He is renowned for his woodworking talents and refers to his line of creations as Kramit guitars. Mark frowns a lot and likes to fish and sit by a campfire speaking of the immense beauty of anything that has strings on it and is made of wood.

DENNIS FISHER - Lighting and Stage Engineer.
"Fish" and Dean are behind the insanity we have come to know as The Glory Days Tower of Power. More lights than should be legal. A list of more effects longer than Bill Clinton's little black book. Fish tirelessly puts together a light show like no other. He must have loved to play with flashlights and smoke bombs as a kid. Fish's artistic side expands to painting too. Fish's favorite pastime is trying to keep Dean under control.

Friday's Featured Guest Artists:

The Van-Dells 8:00 pm Friday, August 11 in the Gazebo.
The Van-Dells The Van-Dells are 50's kind of guys living in the 90's. While space-age boom boxes blast the songs of Madonna, The Smashing Pumpkins and Metallica, The Van-Dells resurrect the hardly-forgotten oldies of Buddy Holly, Bill Haley and The Platters.

The three-man act, backed by a six-piece band, is a greaser's dream come true. "Earth Angel," "Rock Around The Clock" and "The Great Pretender" come back to life when the energetic and zany Van-Dells take the stage.

The first show, the guys wear hop sweaters and saddle shoes, a true vision of the 50's. The be-bop sounds are accompanied by good-natured antics and pranks. During the last show, The Van-Dells degrease their hair and don glitzy costumes. There's no funny business in this show, just lots of singing and smooth choreography that leaves audiences begging for more.

Saturday's Featured Guest Artists:

The Devonshires 8:00 pm Saturday, August 12 in the Gazebo.
The Devonshires Welcome to America's favorite '60's Show featuring THE DEVONSHIRES, the only All-American British band! On tour since 1961, the Devonshire brothers leave their mark in rock music history everywhere they play.

"Freddie Devonshire nearly brought the house down, my club will never be the same" -- Ward Plauche, Backstage Cafe

THE DEVONSHIRES are best known for their smash 60's hits "She Thinks I'm a Sheep" and "Do The Freddie!"

"Do The Freddie" was later banned in 7 countries including the U.S. due to the violent jerking motions associated with the dance. The Jerk Dance (as it became known) led to brain hemorrhage, convulsions, and in some cases, permanent paralysis!

THE DEVONSHIRES Band is composed of five talented brothers from Stalebladder, England.

Actually Freddie was born in Kenya to the Nerdawa Tribe. He was mistakenly crated with a shipment of elephant tusks headed for England. He was found and adopted by Ima Devonshire, a Stalebladder resident and music teacher who gave birth to Ian, Derek, Winston and Carter.

With further adieu, let's introduce these fine brothers:

Ian Buckingham Devonshire - Lead Vocalist and the oldest brother! Ian wrote 150 #1 hit singles in the year 1966 (unfortunately none of them made it to radio in the United States)

Winston Salem Devonshire - Back up vocals & Keyboardist Extraordinaire (he is sometimes accused of using mirrors... the other brothers often fear what they call the "Winston Glare")

Carter Dane Devonshire (a/k/a/ "The Turtle") - Drums & Percussion, was exiled to Helsinki Finland at an early age and speaks no English (he is also a world-renowned hair dresser and does Freddie's hair while on tour)

Derek Dansforth Devonshire brings up the rear (although he has none) on bass guitar and poses as the cordial MC (it's been said that he could talk the ears off a corn stalk).

Frederick Bartholemew Devonshire has been called a freak of nature, peculiar, (and late to dinner), his brothers call him their lead guitarist and embarrassing (he was voted "Worst Dressed Human" in Stalebladder in 1968). The audience should be advised to keep a safe distance and wear protective eye-wear when watching Freddie's on-stage antics to minimize the effects of eye pollution.

With all this in mind... sit back, relax, and enjoy the music that shaped rock-n-roll history!

Compound Fracture 8:00 pm Saturday, August 12 in USWA Union Hall.
Compound Fracture
Compound Fracture

Compound Fracture
Catapolooza

Compound Fracture
Holy Rosary Festival
Compound Fracture started out in August of 1997 as a group of young seventh and eighth graders wanting to make some great music. They soon expanded their list consisting of classic rock tunes and the best of today's rock from Green Day, 311, Harvey Danger and Stone Temple Pilots. Now high schoolers, they can be found playing area festivals, after game dances and events for the St. Marys Youth Center. Fresh off a Finals finish at the huge Napolean, Ohio Battle of the Bands known as Catapolooza, the boys are rockin' the summer away with a stop at St. Marys Summerfest on Saturday night at the USWA Hall.

The members:

ADAM UHLENHAKE - Keyboards
Adam is a devoted musician having played piano since age seven. Besides handling the organ, piano, and synthesizer orchestrations for Compound Fracture, he also toys around with the guitar at home. He is also a member of the Memorial High School Symphonic and Jazz Bands, playing Alto and Tenor Saxophone. Adam is intrigued by the massive history of Rock and Roll and patterns his playing from Ray Manzarek. So it's no surprise that he is a huge fan of The Doors.

MIKE MALLORY - Lead Vocals
Guess you might say that Mike inherited his voice from his dad. Hmmm, could be a pattern here. Mike sings ballads with tenderness, then whacks you in the face with from-the-heart vocaling from rockers like Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Mike plays on the MHS basketball and baseball teams, and is also on the ACME team. He is also a member of the MHS Symphonic Choir.

MATT MALLORY - Bass Guitar, back vocals
Matt's bass lines groove the band along with great precision. He knows and understands the importance of bass guitar to rock music. Together with his twin brother Mike, they provide great vocal cover for the band. Matt loves to jam at rehearsals to expand his musical horizons. Matt too is a member of the Symphonic Choir, MHS basketball and baseball teams as well as ACME baseball.

KEITH WIEHE - Lead Guitar
When Keith isn't using his pitching arm for the St. Marys baseball and ACME teams, he puts his arm to work on guitar music. He covers things from Lynrd Skynrd to Korn. He has developed a sound that is well defined for today's cover bands. Keith is always looking to expand his guitar playing ability. Keith also plays on the MHS basketball team and is a member of the Symphonic Choir.

CHRIS ANDERSON - Drums
When not swinging drum sticks, you'll find Chris swinging a golf club. A member of the MHS Golf team, Chris loves to drive the ball. He also loves to drive the beat of Compound Fracture. Chris has come a long way as a rock drummer and has a knack for theatrical timing at performances. An excellent time keeper, he is also a member of the MHS Symphonic Band.

MARK KLOSTERMAN - Rhythm Guitar
Mark provides great coverage for guitar lines to work in tandem with Keith. Mark appreciates the classic British sound which is evident because of the Union Jack on one of his guitars. Mark is always smiling - so much so that he once got his picture in The Evening Leader with his guitar all by himself! The photographer must have loved his smile. Mark is a member of the MHS Wrestling team and is also involved in MHS baseball and ACME teams.

Sunday's Featured Guest Artists:

The Vogues 7:00 pm Sunday, August 13 in the Gazebo.
The Vogues Classic hits from the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's.

The Vogues created a sound that was a fresh, original blend of harmony and it left an indelible mark on the music world. They have been honored as one of the best vocal groups in popular music. The early recording of "You're The One" thrust them into national acclaim. There followed a series of million seller records and albums, including, "My Special Angel", "Turn Around Look At Me", "5 O'Clock World", "'Till", and so many more.

After years of sharing these favorite hits, The Vogues are now working on a series of new songs including a touch of country. Through the years, faces and names have changed, but the sound remains unmistakeably The Vogues.
