The Memorial High School Jazz Band I, under the direction of Dane Newlove, will be appearing in the Lima Symphony Orchestra "Musicians in the Making" series on Saturday, March 25. The series is designed to give area musicians and organizations a chance to showcase their skills, and then to attend a Lima Symphony Concert free of charge. The 22-member group will perform from 7:15-7:45 PM in the lobby of the Lima Civic Center, prior to the Lima Symphony performance. According to Newlove, "We are thrilled to be asked to represent our school, Performing Arts Department, and community at this event. Our students have practiced hard for this event, and are equally excited about attending the concert by the orchestra. A wide variety of selections will be presented, from big band standards to Latin and blues." The MHS Jazz Bands I and II perform for many school and community events during the winter and spring months. Over 35 students are involved in the jazz program at Memorial. This year, in addition to their performance at the Civic Center, Jazz Band I will perform at the OCCL banquet, the Celina Jazz Festival, MHS Pops Concert, and the 7th annual Jazz in the Park Concert on May 19. |
