ST. MARYS -- The St. Marys Community Public Library Board met Wednesday, April 5, in the library meeting room to address a full agenda. Board President Don Glaser expressed gratitude that the bond issue to expand the library passed and acknowledged the able leadership of Ronda and Larry Shelby, Campaign Committee Co-chairs, and of Carmen Lange, Campaign Committee treasurer. He thanked the Board and staff for their hard work on the campaign.
The architectural firm of MKC Associates is currently refining plans for working drawings. It is expected the project will go out to bid in the fall and that construction will begin in late fall 2000 or early winter 2001. The work will be managed to disrupt library services as little as possible. A technology specialist and interior designer from Vice President Margi Moul discussed plans for the Board Retreat on May 22 and 23. The Board will revisit last year's strategic plan and revise as needed. The Board authorized migration to a new automation system. The current system was installed in 1990 and hasn't been substantially upgraded since. Under the new system, the St. Marys Community Public Library will join a consortium of over 30 libraries and will make available with a web-based catalog over 1,000,000 books, videos, and other materials. The library received a federal LSTA (Library Services and Technology Act) grant in the amount of $15,000 to convert its data for the new system. The new automated system will be up and running by late fall. The Board noted that National Library Week is April 9-15 with the theme "Read, Learn, Connect @ the Library." The "Week of the Young Child" will take place at the same time. Activities are planned and the library will host a fine-free week. Gifts were accepted in memory of Mary Buchanan from Joe Cattarin; in memory of William Stewart from Matt and Kay Nakamura. A gift was received from the Progress Club of St. Marys and the library also gratefully accepted a bequest from the estate of Ruth Protsman. The Board will meet again on Wednesday, May 3 at 1:30 p.m. in the library meeting room. Meetings of the Board of Trustees are open to the public.
