The University Chorus of Wright State - Lake Campus will present “Beautiful Ohio,” a concert in honor of the Ohio Statehood Bicentennial, on Thursday, March 13, at 7:30 p.m. in the Lake Campus auditorium. The chorus will perform under the direction of James Davis of Celina, Adjunct Instructor of Music at the campus, accompanied by Linell Hertenstein of St. Marys.
The chorus will perform its traditional variety of selections, including works by Renaissance, Baroque and Classical composers William Boyce, Baldassare Donato, Antonio Lotti and Johann Crüger; the gospel-tinged Heaven’s Gate by Carl Strommen; and Plenty Good Room, an African-American spiritual.
The concert will also include the works of Ohio writers and composers, such as Isham Jones (It Had to Be You) and jazz great Billy Strayhorn (Satin Doll); Two Poems of Juan Ramón Jiménez, composed for the chorus by music director James Davis; and a medley from the Broadway favorite Bye Bye Birdie, set in Ohio with lyrics by Buckeye native Lee Adams, featuring a visit from “Conrad Birdie” himself.
Soloists will include Hillary Frank of Rockford; Linda Goodwin, Jackie Landrie and Andrew Mott of Celina; and Patrick Murray of New Bremen. For the jazz selections, the chorus will be joined by guest artist Bob Mayer, clarinetist and director of the Defiance College-Community Band.
