Members of Midwest Electric Give $15,000 to Local Charities
ST. MARYS, OHIO -- Members of Midwest Electric, Inc., recently donated more than $15,000 to 10 west-central Ohio charities and community projects through the cooperative’s Community Connection Fund.
Since the program began in 1998, the Midwest Electric Community Connection Fund has provided $221,000 to 135 area causes.
The recent Fund recipients include the following:
- Auglaize County Council on Aging, $4,000 to help purchase a vehicle for transporting county residents to medical appointments, grocery stores, pharmacies and other appointments.
- Family Resource Center, Lima, $2,500 to purchase a computer and printer and information hand-outs for the agency’s alcohol, tobacco and drug prevention program for Allen and Auglaize county students.
- St. Marys Area Chamber of Commerce, $2,000 to help fund the restoration, renovation and relocation of the historic Nickel Plate Railroad Depot as a Chamber office, visitors’ center and tourist attraction.
- Celina City Schools, $1,500 to purchase books for the HOSTS (Help One Student To Succeed) literacy mentoring program.
- Western Ohio Educational Foundation, $1,000 for the academic excellence scholarship program for Wright State University - Lake Campus.
- Osgood Volunteer Fire Department, $1,000 to purchase two combination fog/straight bore fire hose nozzles that will help the Department save time during fire battles.
- Wings - N - Wheels Youth Hockey, Mercer County, $1,000 to purchase hockey equipment for needy and disadvantaged youth to participate in the youth ministry roller hockey league.
- An individual in Franklin Township, Mercer County, $1,000 to defray the cost of installing an underground cable for a lighthouse that would benefit the south side of Grand Lake.
- St. Marys Professional Firefighters Local 3633, $700 to purchase materials for their elementary school fire prevention and education program, and to purchase a pediatric stretcher for infants and children up to 75 pounds.
- Mercy Unlimited, Wapakoneta, $312.50 to purchase a stainless steel work table for the food pantry
The Midwest Community Connection Fund is a voluntary charitable program. Participating members’ monthly electric bills are rounded up to the next dollar, with the additional pennies deposited in the Fund.
A Board of Trustees, comprised of community members and separate from the Midwest Electric Board of Trustees, oversees the application and allocation process.
