A recent athletic banquet was held at the Lake Campus of Wright State University to honor and recognize the Lakers’ basketball teams, their coaches, their fans and boosters, and their seasons.

For the first time ever in their history, the Men’s Lakers finished their season as runner-up in the Ohio Regional Campus (ORC) state tournament, losing in the final game to Miami Middletown by only one point, 69-70. The men’s team finished its season with a 23-12 record.

Especially recognized was Men’s Laker Jeff Quellhorst who set and broke a number of records this season. Quellhorst, a graduate of New Bremen High School, not only broke the all time career total points record with 1869 points, but also had 162 season assists and the 3rd highest total for season rebounds with 315. His season high point total was 726 in the 2000-01 season when he also got a high of 44 per game and a 26.89 average. Quellhorst was presented with a game basketball autographed by teammates and his coach.

Other high career totals were Colby Rager of Van Wert High School with 908, ranking him 10th highest scorer, and Ben Ayers, also from Van Wert High School, with 866, 11th highest scorer. Rager also set a new record for three-point field goals made in one game, sinking 10 three-pointers.

Men’s Lakers’ team records include the most games won in a season, 23, and the most points scored in a single game, 153, in its game against OSU Marion. The team also scored 129 points against Cincinnati Clermont this season.

THE LADY LAKERS ended their season with a 14-9 record. In a heartbreaking loss, the Ladies lost to Ohio University Zanesville in their ORC tournament game. The Lady Lakers’ records include hitting the Century Mark for the first time in Lady Lakers’ basketball history, not just once with 104 points against Grace Bible College but two more times this season as well. Another record set was the “most decisive victory” with an 87 gap in the game with Ohio University Southern, 122-35. Single records include Kate Mueller from New Bremen High School with a season record rebound total of 272, 22 per game and 14 consecutive free throws, just one short of the record of 15. Stephanie Brown from Crestview also had 22 rebounds per game, and she tied the single game record of 11 steals and is 3rd on the list with 248 rebounds this year. Jenny Shaffer of Parkway tied the single game assists record with 12, and had 100 season total assists, ranking her second on the all-time records list.

Said Ron Rife, Lake Campus Athletic Director, “This 2002-03 basketball season has been a most exciting year. I want to say a word of thank you to the Lake Campus Athletic Boosters for their enthusiastic support during this year’s season. I am especially grateful to Elizabeth Staugler and Brenda Godfrey who contributed so much to the season’s total success. Both of our teams should be very proud of their accomplishments on the court. I can’t wait until next year,” a sentiment that is enthusiastically echoed by all the Laker players, coaches, boosters, and fans.
