2003 Organizational Leadership Class Makes Capstone Presentations

As part of their program, students seeking the Bachelor of Science in Organizational Leadership degree at the Lake Campus of Wright State University are required to complete a senior capstone project, the culmination of a year’s worth of work in which the students learn the skills necessary to apply classroom material to solve an actual administrative problem within one of their organizations. The third class to complete the OL program recently gave their capstone projects to fellow classmates, business associates and supervisors, and family and friends during a special presentation in the Lake Campus auditorium.

In her welcome, Anita Curry-Jackson, Dean of the Lake Campus, offered her congratulations to the class members, noting that “this is a very important milestone you’ve reached.”

Students perform a problem diagnosis and needs assessment, develop and implement a program to solve that specific problem, and assess the value of the solution selected. Through these capstone projects, students are given the opportunity to put to use the knowledge and skills they’ve gained throughout their two-year completion program. Individually or as a team, the students must plan, implement, and evaluate a project, and make a formal presentation at its conclusion.

Dr. Mindy McNutt, Assistant Professor and Organizational Leadership Program Coordinator, extolled the value of the capstone project for OL students. “These projects are the culmination of a year’s worth of planning, research, preparation, and final implementation. And most importantly, they show that these students have been able to grasp the ‘essence of leadership.’”

Pictured are Erik Overly (left) of New Bremen and Rick Walls of Celina as they present their capstone project, “Minster Village Wellness Program.” This program they created to benefit Village of Minster employees explores good health risk factors and provides solutions in a fun, motivating and challenging way. Overly is employed by the Minster Police Department and Walls works for Parker Corporation.

Pictured is Sandra Schulze of Yorkshire, Manufacturing Design Manager for Sidney Manufacturing Company, as she discusses “Get Your Production Flowing,” her capstone project designed to restructure her company’s production flow and improve its manufacturing process.

Pictured, left to right, are class members Matt Wibbeler of St. Marys, Amy Kemper of Minster, and Jordan Giesige of Celina. The group’s capstone project was “A SEED for Business.” The group designed a booklet that can act as a SEED or a springboard for establishing operating guidelines for small companies. The booklet includes sections on Sales, Ethics, and Employee Development.

Pictured is Bryan Davenport of Celina, Team Leader Administrator for Miller House/Assisted Living Concepts. His capstone, titled “Office Organization and Structure,” was designed to reorganize his company’s office for better efficiency and operation. The organization plan is also being used in the company’s other offices.

Pictured are Shannon Smith (left) of Anna and Linda Duesterhaus of Sidney, as they present their capstone project, “Notice! A New Medical Direction for Child Support.” The project was developed for the Child Support Division of the Shelby County Department of Job & Family Services where both are employed - Duesterhaus as the agency’s administrator and Smith as case manager supervisor. The problem their project addressed was that there is no mention of medical support in general child support regulations, and the two developed a plan to remedy the situation.

Pictured is Nick Tshimanyika of Sidney who works for DHL Worldwide Express. His capstone project was titled “DHL/Domestic Market Share Improvement Trend,” in which he laid out a plan of attack and recommended the steps needed to increase DHL’s share in the domestic market. DHL is the world’s leading international air carrier but its domestic market share needed addressing.

Pictured is Dale Grillot of New Bremen, Project Manager with Crown Equipment Corp. Grillot developed a “Product Development Cost Analysis System” for his company for his capstone project. The goals of the project included identifying cost measurement deficiencies and seeking the solution to the problem. Grillot performed a step-by-step comparison of the company’s product development process and its corresponding cost analysis.

Pictured is Celina’s Luke Vantilburg of VanTilburg Farms, Inc. who researched, designed, and implemented a website for his capstone project titled “Providing Agricultural Producers with a Website to Improve Their Productivity.” The site’s completion now helps fulfil the company’s mission statement that highlights “farmers serving farmers, helping farmers earn the maximum return on each dollar they invest.”
