Former Celina residents Gene and Karen Miller of Sandusky are shown making their annual donation of $100 to the Academic Excellence Fund at the Lake Campus of Wright State University.
Miller, who with his wife was a guest at the Lake Campus to hear the recent University’s Annual Report to the Community, began his college education at the Western Ohio Branch Campus (WOBC) in 1962. That was before what is now the Lake Campus became affiliated with Wright State University. He was part of the first class of 285 students who began school in WOBC’s first school building in downtown Celina. He gives this early experience a lot of credit. “If it hadn’t been for WOBC, I wouldn’t be where I am today.” Miller completed his undergraduate work in Celina and graduated from Ohio Northern University in 1967.
Miller worked for New Idea for 17 years. He later moved to Sandusky and recently retired as vice president of purchasing for Clevite in Milan, Ohio. Says Miller, “I probably wouldn’t have gone back to further my education if it weren’t for the opportunity presented by the Western Ohio Educational Foundation at WOBC. And now I want to contribute back to the campus’ scholarship fund so others who otherwise might not be able to come to school can have this same opportunity.”
$3000 Academic Excellence Scholarships are awarded to a high school senior from each of the high schools in Auglaize, Mercer, and Van Wert counties; from Ansonia, Greenville, Mississinawa Valley, and Versailles high schools in Darke County; and from Delphos St. Johns, Delphos Jefferson, and Spencerville high schools in Allen County. The scholarship is renewable for $1000 for a second year.
