Grand Lake Law Enforcement Academy Class Accepting Applications

Kip Wright, Commander of the Grand Lake Law Enforcement Academy (GLLEA) at the Lake Campus of Wright State University, announced today that applications are being accepted for fall classes beginning September 8, 2003. Academy classes meet Monday through Thursday evenings with three to six 8-hour Saturday classes.

Interested persons must have a minimum of a high school diploma or G.E.D., be 18 years of age or older by July 1, 2003, must be able to meet physical fitness minimums, must not have a felony or domestic violence conviction, and must have a valid driver’s license to be eligible for this training. Priority will be given to individuals with letters of recommendation from a local law enforcement agency. The initial cost of the course is $1,600 which is nonrefundable and due prior to the first day of class. The student is responsible for providing a handgun with an approved holster, ammunition for the handgun, and ammunition for the shotgun portion of the training. Students will need a suitable vehicle for the defensive driving course and proper attire for class activities (gym clothes or sweats). A July 31, 2003, deadline has been established for applications.

All of the Academy classes are taught by working or retired law enforcement officers and are basic law enforcement classes that are in compliance with the standards set forth by the State of Ohio through the Ohio Peace Officers Training Commission (OPOTC). Classes include courses ranging from first aid and defensive driving to Search and Seizure and the Ohio Revised Code.

Law Enforcement Basic Academy Commander and Mercer County Sheriff’s Detective Kip Wright, who also is one of the Ohio Peace Officers Training Academy (OPOTA) certified trainers for the Academy, notes that “What you will really learn is the meaning of ‘to protect and serve,’ the motto of OPOTA.”

A recognition ceremony was held at the Lake Campus in May for the first GLLEA graduating class. For more information contact Wright at the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office, (419) 586-2407 (H) or (419) 586-7724 (W).
