The Business Enterprise Center (BEC) at the Lake Campus of Wright State University is offering a number of small business classes and seminars during Fall 2003.
QuickBooks 2002 will be offered Tuesday through Thursday, September 2, 3, and 4, from 6-10 p.m., in Room 194 at the campus. The cost for this session is $90. This workshop will review various means of data entry for accurate record keeping, and participants will learn to set up and use the software. Instruction will include such topics as invoice and statement preparation, inventory tracking, payroll, and financial reporting. Reports from QuickBooks can be easily transferred to Excel spreadsheets. Instructor is Ron Kremer, Lake Campus Associate Professor of Accountancy.
Another QuickBooks workshop also taught by Kremer will be offered in December - on Monday, December 1, Tuesday, December 2, and Wednesday, December 3. Participants completing either of these 12-hour workshops will receive a certificate.
The Introduction to Supervision and Intermediate Supervision two-session courses are also being offered again this Fall, taught by BEC Director Jon Heffner and BEC’s Human Resource Development instructor Julie Miller. Each seminar costs $90.
The Introduction course is intended for new and prospective supervisors. Topics include supervisory roles and responsibility, systematic decision making, the supervisor’s role in hiring, employee motivation, and the supervisor’s role in strategic planning. Dates are on Wednesdays, October 1 and October 8, from 6-9 p.m. in Room 182.
In the Intermediate Supervision two-session course, persons already working in a supervisory role and individuals previously enrolled in the Introduction course will be introduced to topics including the supervisor’s role in budget process, positive employee discipline, current legal issues impacting supervisors, employee orientation, training, and performance review, dealing with a diverse workforce, and positively influencing production and quality. This two-session course is scheduled for two Wednesdays, October 15 and October 22, from 6-9 p.m. in Room 182 at the campus.
On Wednesday, November 5, a three-hour Strategic Business Planning seminar will offer valuable information for new or existing businesses. Among topics discussed will be how to coordinate your company’s objectives into a strategic business plan. Once that plan is developed, you will learn how to utilize your company’s operating procedures to impact the plan and real strategies to help assess and obtain more desirable results. This seminar costs $55 per company for up to three individuals. The seminar will be held from 6-9 p.m. in Room 182 at the campus. Instructor is Jon Heffner.
Another three-hour seminar taught by Heffner offers a variety of options to help your company utilize public and private funding sources in achieving company goals. In this seminar, titled Financing Business Operations and Expansions, investment opportunities as they relate to business growth will also be discussed. This seminar will be held in Room 182 at the Lake Campus from 6-9 p.m. on Wednesday, December 3. This seminar costs $55 per company for up to three individuals.
Excel 2002 will be offered in a three-session seminar on Monday, December 8, Tuesday, December 9, and Wednesday, December 10 from 6-10 p.m. in Lake Campus’ Room 194. The cost is $90 for all three sessions. The emphasis of this 12-hour seminar is on record keeping, business applications using Microsoft Excel, and various techniques using the spreadsheet. Learn Excel formulas from basic to complex computations. Participants will receive a certificate. Instructor is Ron Kremer, Lake Campus Associate Professor of Accountancy.
Also being offered at the campus and taught by Jon Heffner is the pre-business planning seminar “Starting Right,” in which participants will learn what steps are required to borrow money, how to write a business plan, and what tax and legal issues they should be aware of. The workshop is a basic overview of how to successfully plan a new business. Two free individual counseling sessions are included with this seminar. The seminar is held the second and fourth Thursday of every month at 6 to 8 p.m. in Room 220C at the campus. Cost is $35 per business.
