BAGHDAD, IRAQ -- Hello from Baghdad.
Things are going well over here. We started our new job, which is the river patrol and checking up on the Iraqi Crime Scene Investigations (CSI) unit. The CSI unit is kind of a joke right now considering they have no supplies to do their job, but we are working on that.
The river patrol is pretty good. We patrol up and down the river and are working on training their dive teams. The other day on Patrol my team got shot at, but no rounds hit near the boat to cause any harm. We think that they were just warning shots to kind of scare us off.
Today we worked on seeing how the dive teams operate and saw what kind of equipment they have. The dive team knows how to do their jobs but they don't have enough equipment. They have the wet suits and tanks, but the tanks have no regulators or octupus hoses. Since they have no weight belts they tie a rope to a cement block and throw it overboard, then pull themselves down and check the bottom as the boat drifts down the river.
It looks really cheap, but it's interesting to see how these people improvise.
