With the purpose of helping students with the rising costs of a college education, the Knights of Columbus, St. Marys Council 1592, continues to help St. Marys residents with its annual book scholarship at the Lake Campus of Wright State University. The Knights of Columbus award varying amounts each year, and the Western Ohio Educational Foundation (WOEF) matches these funds.
Two St. Marys residents attending the Lake Campus have been awarded book scholarships of $150. The WOEF board has matched these funds for a total of $300 to each student. The students are Krista Glaser and Andrea Herman.
Glaser, a senior at the Lake Campus majoring in Early Childhood Education, is the daughter of Jerry and Karen Glaser of St. Marys. Krista hopes to get a teaching job in the area and pursue a master’s degree in special education. Activities Glaser is involved in include working with the HOSTS mentoring program, volunteering in a kindergarten class in East Elementary school in St. Marys, and participating in the Lake Campus’ Reading Center. She also tutors high school algebra and works as a part-time manager at Maurice’s, St. Marys.
A junior majoring in Biological Sciences, Herman is the daughter of John and Jean Herman of Ottoville. Andrea, who has worked for almost two years as an optometric assistant for Drs. Sandker and Gerlach in Celina, plans to finish her bachelor’s degree at Wright State and then attend The Ohio State University of Optometry to attain a doctorate of optometry. Some of the extracurricular activities Herman pursues include being Red Cross and March of Dimes volunteer and church lector. She also works at the Lake Campus as a tutor and lab assistant in the Academic & Instructional Services department.
The Knights of Columbus scholarship is open to any St. Marys area resident attending the Lake Campus who is a continuing education student with at least 45 hours of earned credit.
