Pictured is the cookbook opened (at left) to one of the four main recipe sections in the book - “Comprehension Main Dishes.” Also shown is one of the recipes for German Casserole, submitted by an 11-year-old Reading Center student, who quotes at the bottom of the recipe: “I like this recipe because it has stuff I like in it. It tastes great, and trust me you will like it, too!”. |
The Wright State University Lake Campus Reading Center has compiled a cookbook titled “Recipes from Readers” that includes contributions from Reading Center students, instructors, and staff members. On the back cover of the book it is noted that “All money raised [from cookbook sales] will go towards the education of the kids in the Reading Center.”
The cookbooks include the categories of Brain Gym Appetizers and Bread, Fluency Side Dishes, Comprehension Main Dishes, and Dialogue Journal Desserts. These category names were chosen to reflect some of the main concepts that The Reading Center personnel are trying to convey to students.
The cookbooks are available for order at only $6 per book. The deadline to order these cookbooks is Monday, December 15. To order, contact Liane Muhlenkamp, Program Officer Assistant for Teacher Education, at 419-586-0316 or 1-800-237-1477, extension 8316.
The Lake Campus Reading Center at the conclusion of its first year of operation in Spring 2003 could sing its own praises with a number of remarkable accomplishments that include training 250 individual teachers, holding a two-week summer program in both 2002 and 2003 called Camp Read, creating “how to help your children read” parent training sessions, holding more than 25 mini-lessons in conjunction with instructional sessions, instructing more than 300 students in Saturday and summer programs, and making staff presentations at a number of area workshops.
The Reading Center was established to enhance the literacy foundations of the school districts in the Wright State University Lake Campus constituency area by creating a Center that will provide support to schools and families, and that will enable children now and into the future.
