Midwest Electric awards $4,500 in scholarships to six local youth

St. Marys Memorial High School’s Elaine Schaaf and Mitchell Hirschfeld captured top honors in 2004 Midwest Electric, Inc. scholarship judging at Wright State University-Lake Campus, Celina.

The two seniors each receive a $1,000 scholarship and will represent Midwest Electric in the Ohio Rural Electric Cooperatives statewide scholarship competition, May 10 in Columbus.

Second place $750 scholarships were awarded to Carla Brenneman, Elida High School, and Clinton Steinbrunner, St. Henry High School.

Receiving third place $500 scholarship awards were Erica Bruggeman, St. Marys Memorial High School, and Jacob Eilerman, Coldwater High School.

The six were selected from a field of 54 area high school seniors, with a 3.5 or higher grade point average, whose parents are Midwest Electric customers.

Schaaf has a 4.0 grade point average and is ranked fifth in her class. She is planning to study bio-chemistry or pre-med and is considering a number of Ohio universities. She is the daughter of Larry and Michelle Schaaf, St. Marys.

Hirschfeld is the son of Erik and Janna Hirschfeld, New Bremen. He has a 3.975 grade point average and is ranked 16th in his class. He plans to pursue an education in mathematics or engineering at an Ohio university.

Brenneman will attend Cedarville University to study psychology. She has a 4.0 grade point average and is ranked first in her class. Her parents are Kim and Bev Brenneman, Delphos.

Steinbrunner will major in music education and minor in German language, and has not decided which university he will attend. He has a 3.981 grade point average, is ranked second in his class, and is the son of Roger and Teresa Steinbrunner, St. Henry.

Bruggeman will pursue an education in physical therapy at The Ohio State University. She has a 4.0 grade point average and is ranked second in her class. She is the daughter of Thomas and Kathryn Bruggeman, St. Marys.

Eilerman will study accounting or secondary education and has not yet chosen a university. He has a 4.0 grade point average, is ranked second in his class, and is the son of Charles and Diane Eilerman, Coldwater.

Midwest Electric is the customer-owned electric cooperative for 10,000 homes, farms and businesses in Allen, Auglaize, Mercer, Van Wert, Shelby, Darke and Putnam counties.
