Band Parents Raise $2,750 by Assisting Duck Race

K.C. Geiger Park Committee President Rees McKee presents St. Marys Band Parents Co-President Ron Wilker a check for $2,750.00 as Band Director Dane Newlove looks on. Witnessing the presentation were (L-R): Band Parent officers Kent and Marcia Schlegel (Co-Secretaries), band member Chad Vondenhuevel, John and Tracy Miller (Co-Vice-Presidents).

ST. MARYS -- The K.C. Geiger Park Committee presented a check for $2,750 to the St. Marys Band Parents organization in the Memorial High School Performing Arts Center before band practice Tuesday, August 31.

The Park Committee enlisted the assistance of the Band Parents in planning and executing this year's Summerfest Duck Race, the Committee's biggest annual fundraiser, held Sunday, August 15.

"We surpassed our long-term goal establishing a trust fund for K.C. Geiger Park last year," explained Committee President Rees McKee. "So this year we decided to share both the reward and the work load of putting on the Duck Race with a non-profit, youth-oriented community organization. We were fortunate to partner with the Band Parents, and hope to continue that partnership in the future."

The Band Parents were paid a commission for pre-sold Duck Race tickets, and a fee for assisting with prize solicitation and Race setup and tear-down. With the Band Parents' help, the Duck Race sold 2542 tickets and gave out 140 prizes this year, both records for the event.

"This was a positive experience for our organization," said Band Parents Co-President Ron Wilker, "and a welcome boost to our fundraising efforts for the year. The St. Marys All Brass Band is celebrating its 50th anniversary, and is planning a trip to compete in Gatlinburg, Tennessee in 2005. We look forward to working next year's Duck Race."
