NEW BREMEN, OHIO -- The Sammy Kaye Orchestra will “sing and sway” down memory lane, playing 50 years of Sammy Kaye Orchestra hits, as well as paying tribute to Sammy Kaye friends Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman.
Sammy Kaye, celebrated orchestra leader was a native of Rocky River, Ohio, where he grew up, attended high school, excelled in athletics and upon graduation in 1928, received a track scholarship to Ohio University as state low-hurdles champ. While at college, he made the football team, formed a band that played in the basement of the Logan’s Book Store and washed dishes in Lindley Hall. After earning his degree in civil engineering, Sammy made many records, composed music and appeared in a couple of movies. He had several radio series, including Sunday Serenade in the late ’40s and early ‘50s.
Now under the direction of Roger Thorpe, a member of the Big band Hall of Frame, The Sammy Kaye Orchestra stays true to the traditions of the big band era. Their performance will delight big band lovers with such classics as “Harbor Lights”, “Daddy”, and “So You Want to Lead a Band.” Join Lock One Community Arts for this wonderful evening, June 26, 2005
