ROCKFORD, OHIO --
The 2002 edition of The St. Marys Roughriders rode the arms of Keith Wiehe and Mike Mallory to win the season’s opener for both teams, 1-0, in Rockford on April 1.
Wiehe went 6-1/3 innings giving up only two hits while striking out six. Mallory came on in the bottom of the seventh and stuck out the last two hitters on six pitches to pick up his first save.
Parkway’s pitchers were almost as dominant as the Riders recorded just four hits while striking out 12 times.
The Riders hits were by Adam Lauth, John Pfeffenberger, Mark Bergman, and Nathan Homan. Stephen Kill added two stolen bases and Adam Lauth had one.
St. Marys earned the only run of the game in the fifth inning when Pfeffenberger doubled off the fence in right centerfield and Bergman singled sharply to plate him.
The Riders had a few other opportunities to score but couldn’t get a run across.
“I’m extremely happy with the way that Keith and Mike pitched tonight and as equally pleased with our defense. Offensively, we are going to have to spend a little more time in the batting cage.” Coach Bill Cheslock said.
The Riders continue action this afternoon traveling to Indian Lake. Game time is 5:00 with senior lefthander Dan Zink slated to start. St. Marys will open their home portion of the schedule Thursday when the St. Henry Redskins come to town for a 4:30 start.
Thanks, Bill Cheslock.
