Mime, Mask and Music from Japan
Open Community Arts Council Season

The College-Community Arts Council will open its 2002-2003 season at 8 p.m. Saturday, October 5, 2002, with an evening of Japanese music and storytelling featuring Kuniko Yamamoto.

The performance will be held at the Lecture Hall, Celina High School, Celina, Ohio. Tickets will be on sale at the door, Adults $10, Students, $5.

Miss Yamamoto is a native of Japan. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Otani University in Japan. She started performing professionally in Osaka where she grew up studying traditional dance, music, and theater.

In 1985 she performed Japanese storytelling on Kunsai National Television. The following year, she came to the United States with Faulkner Light Theater, helping present lavish stage illusions which brought ancient tales to life with shadows and magic. For the next five years, she performed constantly in theaters, schools, and colleges across the country.

In 1992, she left the Faulkner Light Theater for Florida and now tours the state frequently. She is often featured by Disney in the Japanese Pavillion at Epcot. Her pantomime combines handmade masks and original musical compositions to weave myths and traditions into a unique form of educational entertainment.

In addition to the public performance on October 5, Miss Yamamoto will be featured in the Arts Council’s annual School Residency, September 30 to October 11. Among the schools at which she will perform are Coldwater Elementary, New Knoxville Elementary, Buckland Elementary, Centennial Elementary, St. Joseph’s, Franklin Elementary, East Elementary, St. Marys, Ft. Recovery Elementary, Northridge Elementary, Noble Elementary, Immaculate Conception, Holy Rosary, Parkway Junior High, and Cridersville Elementary. In addition, she will present a special pre-school program at 10:30 a.m. in the St. Marys Public Library on Thursday, October 10.

Performances for Mercer County Schools are underwritten by the Mercer County Civic Foundation. Appearances in Auglaize County Schools are paid for by The United Way of Auglaize County. The College-Community Arts Council would like to extend a special thanks to both these organizations. With their help, from four to six thousand local schoolchildren are introduced each year to delightful and educational cultural experiences.

The season will continue with the Loston Harris Jazz Quartet which will perform at 8 p.m. on Saturday, November 9, 2002 at the Performing Arts Center of Memorial High School, St. Marys, Ohio. On Sunday, December 1, 2002, the Moscow Boys Choir will return to this area.

The group will present “Christmas Around the World” at 7:00 p.m. in Holy Trinity Church, Coldwater, Ohio. The performance will include seasonal music from around the world. Also featured will be traditional favorites such as Silver Bells, excerpts from Handel’s Messiah, and a hauntingly beautiful rendition of Silent Night.

Coming next spring will be Cleveland Duo and James Umble, saxophonist, a unique combination of piano, violin, and saxophone which will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 22, 2003, in the Wright State University-Lake Campus Auditorium.
