LIMA - The Memorial High boys and girls cross country teams finished eighth at the Western Buckeye League Meet Saturday at Farout Park in Lima.

Defiance dominated the boys meet placing seven runners in the top 12 to win with a near -perfect score of 22 points. Van Wert was a distance second with 61 points.

Just 35 points separated the next six teams, as the Roughriders finished just a few places from a possible top-five finish.

Elida took the third spot with 122 points, followed by Celina with 128, Ottawa-Glandorf with 135, Shawnee 152, Wapakoneta 155 and St. Marys 157.

Bath was well off the pace in ninth place with 259 points, while Kenton was tenth with 318 points.

The top 12 runners received First Team All-WBL honors, while runners in 13th-22nd netted Second Team Honors.

Senior Chet Dicke and Sophomore Adam Maze both received All-WBL honors for the Riders. Dicke finished 15th in 18:17, just ahead of Maze who was 16th in 18:20.

Lee Schwieterman was next for the Riders in 33rd at 19:14, followed by a pack led by Travis Frilling in 46th (19:53); Bryan Cook 47th (19:59) and P.J. Stilwell 48th (20:00).

Tetsuya Kimora rounded out the Riders' top seven with a 58th place finish in 20:48.


Van Wert freshman Craig Leon was the overall winner in 16:38.

The St. Marys Junior Varsity boys finished fifth out of six teams. Kyle Hirt paced the Riders in 21st at 21:45, followed by Greg Helmstetter in 23rd at 21:58; Louie Doenges 28th at 22:29; Chris Cole in 40th at 23:30 and Matt Fledderjohann in 42nd at 23:59.

Van Wert won the girls competition with 39 points, followed by Defiance with 55 points, Celina 72, Wapakoneta 83, Ottawa-Glandorf 127, Elida 127, Shawnee 213 and St. Marys 243. Bath and Kenton did not field varsity teams.

Amy Buck led the way for the Riders in 43rd place at 24:29. She was followed by Rachel Roberts in 53rd at 25:46; Tiffany Bergman in 54th at 26:07, Karen Briggs in 56th at 26:32; Annie Goodwin 58th in 27:03 and Ashley Wilker 59th in 27:46.

The Riders did not have enough runners to field a JV team, however, some individuals ran, led by Lindsay McEldowney, who finished 25th in 30:09.

The St. Marys boys and girls teams will be back in action Saturday at the Division II District Meet in Ottawa.
