WSU-LC Hosts In-Service

A recent teacher in-service held at the Lake Campus of Wright State University featured keynote speaker Dr. J. David Cooper, Adjunct Professor of Education at Ball State University.

Cooper spoke on “Unlocking Student Success with a Research-based Literacy Program.” The workshop, cosponsored by the Lake Campus and the West Central Regional Professional Development Center (RPDC) Literacy Grant Program, was funded by a literacy mini-grant sponsored by RPDC’s Region Three.

Cooper’s most current work includes conducting research and developing programs on reading intervention for students in grades 3-8. He has been a reviewer for several professional journals and is a member of a number of professional organizations, including International Reading Association. Cooper is the author of Literacy: Helping Children Construct Meaning and is a senior author for Houghton-Mifflin Company’s Soar to Success and Early Success as well as A Legacy of Literacy. He has served as Professor and Director of Reading at Ball State and is recognized as one of the leading reading authorities in the United States.

In addition to Cooper’s presentation, attendees could choose from a number of breakout sessions led by area teachers considered to have expertise in their topic areas, and could also receive in-service credit for attendance. Participating teachers and presenters were from schools in Allen, Auglaize, Mercer, and Darke counties.

The West Central Ohio Regional Professional Development Center is a division of the Ohio Department of Education. It serves the eight county region of Allen, Auglaize, Mercer, Hancock, Hardin, Van Wert, Paulding, and Putnam Counties, providing services, support, and guidance to school districts in all areas of professional development for teachers and administrators. Judy Brewer, Auglaize County Educational Service Center (ESC); Paula Bryan, Lake Campus Teacher Education Program Officer; and Pam Bell of Auglaize County ESC serve as coordinators for these and other educational programs.

In the spring of 2002, educators in West Central’s service area were offered an opportunity to apply for funding up to $3000 to support innovative projects that would enhance the expertise of teachers of reading. The Wright State Lake Campus Reading Center proposed a mini-conference project featuring practicing classroom teachers as presenters, and Reading Center staff were informed of the award of funding in early summer.

For more information call Brewer at 419-738-3422, or Bryan at 419-586-0352 or 1-800-237-1477, extension 8352.
