Laker B-Ballers Breaking Records
One week after the WSU-LC Lady Lakers broke the century mark for the first time in the women team's 16-year basketball history, the mens team made a piece of Lakers basketball history themselves this past Friday night as the Lakers played host to Kentucky Christian College of Grayson, Ky.
With 10:09 left in the first half of the game, Jeff Quellhorst of New Bremen broke the career total points record that was held by Mike Puthoff at 1485 points. Puthoff had held the record since 1994. Dr. Puthoff (now a practicing physician in Dayton) was in attendance and presented the game ball to Quellhorst in an honorary Lake Campus tradition. The game was halted for the presentation at a point where the Lakers were leading the Knights by 26-14.
The momentum shifted in favor of the Knights once the game resumed and the half time score had the Lakers on top by a narrow margin, 42-36. During the second half the Knights continued to close the gap, tying the game with 3:41 to go.
The fans were on their feet in the final minutes of the game as Laker Alan Vining was fouled and made two free throws with 4 seconds to go and made what turned out to be the winning bucket of the game. The final score was 71-68. Taking the Lakers record to 7-2.
Leading scorers for the Lakers were, Alan Vining out of Crestview High School with 19 pts., including three 3- pointers. Followed by Colby Rager of Van Wert with 14 pts., Allan Johns of Wapakoneta with 11 pts., Jeff Quellhorst with 9 pts., Ben Ayers from Van Wert High School with 8 pts., Craig Walder of Dayton Christian scoring all 5 of his points in the first half of play.
The Lakers play next on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 2:00 in a home game against the University of Findlay J.V. Mens coach is Dan Hegemier.
In the Lady Lakers winning game against Grace Bible College, the Ladys scored 104 points to their opponents 69, making this the first time in 16 seasons of play the Lady Lakers scored more than 100 points in a game.
In another highlight of Lady Lakers basketball, the Lakers Kate Mueller scored a high of 32 in a home game against Indiana Institute of Technology J.V.
The Lady Lakers record now stands at 4-1 after a crushing victory against Miami-Middletown Tuesday night, 97-28. Coached by Christina Wolcott, the Lady Lakers will next play on Tuesday, Dec. 3, at 6:30 p.m., in an away game against Ohio University-Zanesville.
All WSU-Lake Campus home games are played at the Mercer Auglaize Family Y. Admission is free. The Lake Campus Ron Rife is the Lakers academic director.
