March 27, 2008 - Press Release

Guitar Hero III Ultimate Tournament to Rock the River

ST. MARYS, OHIO -- The Grand Lake Theatrix Community Theatre Association will host "Rock the River," a public Guitar Hero III tournament, in the Grand Ballroom of the St. Marys Theatre from 4:00 to 10:00 pm on Saturday, April 12, 2008.

For non-gamers: the Guitar Hero video game series uses a control device in the shape of an electric guitar, which the player operates in rhythm with licensed rock songs and original game music. Pressing a series of five buttons on the guitar fretboard and a "strum bar" on the guitar body simulates playing a guitar. The better the players' actions sync with the soundtrack, the higher the scores.

The game has become a cultural phenomenon, selling more than 14 million units in PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, PC and Mac platforms. The next version, Guitar Hero IV, scheduled for release in June 2008, reportedly is being created in close collaboration with rock superstars Aerosmith.

Tournaments have become very popular, as the stand-up performance aspect of the game design, coupled with music favorites, create an entertaining and competitive show environment. The "Rock the River" tournament will be played on the St. Marys Theatre's "extreme screen" video display.

There will be a $3.00 cover charge for the audience; participants must pay a $10.00 entry fee (which includes their cover charge), and supply their own "guitar." Trophies/prizes/awards will be presented immediately following the tournament.

The "Rock the River" Guitar Hero III Ultimate Tournament is a fund raising event held by the Grand Lake Theatrix Community Theatre Association, a local non-profit organization. Proceeds will benefit the association's "Kidz Drama Klub," and will be used to send members to a summer performance camp.

Participants can sign up by filling out the application form (click here for PDF) or by calling 419-394-5944 for more information. Online registration is also available at www.guitarhero.com (search the calendar for April 12 under the "Tournaments" tab).
