Local Student Named National Merit Scholarship Semi-finalist
ST. MARYS - Memorial High School senior Jim Coons, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Coons, has qualified as a National Merit Semi-Finalist. Semi-finalists are the highest scoring students in each state and they represent about one-half of one percent of the State’s secondary school seniors.
Students entered the National Merit Scholarship competition by taking the PSAT/NMSQT their junior year which served as the initial screening of more than one million participants. The Selection Index system narrowed the group to 16,000 semi-finalists nationwide.
The National Merit Award finalists will be named in the spring. In order to qualify, Jim must maintain high academic standards, be endorsed by the high school principal, take the SAT test and submit the written application portion of the standards.
School and family play an important role in the development of able young people and recognition by the National Merit Program speaks highly of Jim's individual academic talents. While at Memorial High School, Jim has been involved with the Scholastic Bowl Team, National Honor Society, Glitter-N-Gold, Buckeye's Boy State, and is a member of the cross country and tennis teams.
After graduation, Jim plans to attend college and major in secondary education. |
