Minster Topples Riders in Home Opener
ST. MARYS -- Capitalizing on its size advantage, Minster spoiled St. Marys' home basketball opener Saturday with a 70-55 victory over the Roughriders at McBroom Gym.
The Wildcats' starting lineup featured Alex Schmiesing (6-6), David Patch (6-5); and Dustin Sommer (6-4) in the front court, while no one in the Riders' starting lineup could crack 6-2.
Minster out-rebounded the St. Marys 27-8 in the first half and built a 10-point lead that the Riders were never able to seriously threaten. The Cats finished with a 42-17 edge on the boards as Schmiesing finished with nine rebounds and 16 points despite seeing limited playing time due to foul trouble.
The Riders tried to counter with a three-point barrage, but other than a spurt in the fourth quarter, were never able to heat up.
St. Marys was able to whittle Minster's lead to six points a few times in the third quarter, but just couldn't come up with the big stop or the big bucket to get any closer.
Adam Graves matched his 21-point performance from Friday's 65-59 loss to St. Henry to pace the Roughriders in scoring. Tyler Sampson and Matt Fannon each hit double digits with 11 and 10 points respectively.
Schmiesing's 16 led the Wildcats. Brad Prenger added 14 and Sommer 10.
Minster improved to 3-0 with the victory, while the Riders are 0-2 after their first weekend of play.
St. Marys will open Western Buckeye League play Friday at home against Van Wert. The Riders will host Delphos St. John's on Saturday.
The St. Marys junior varsity fell to 0-2 with a 52-42 setback Friday. Freshman Scott Vossler paced the Riders with 15 points. Eric Kerns added seven and Matt Mallory 6. Justin Gusching was the high scorer for Minster with 14 points.
