Author to Visit St. Marys

ST. MARYS -- Young Adult and Children's author, Sharon Draper, will visit the students of three St. Marys schools, McBroom, Holy Rosary, and Memorial High, on Wednesday, April 25. That evening, there will be a free program and reception for the public at Holy Rosary School gym, 128 South Pine, St. Marys, hosted by the Friends of the St. Marys Community Public Library.

Ms. Draper wrote Forged by Fire, the first of a popular and award-winning series called the Hazelwood High Trilogy, the 1997 winner of the Coretta Scott King award, the ALA Best Book Award, and the Parents&Mac226; Choice Award. The other two titles are Tears of a Tiger and Darkness Before Dawn. Another novel written for young adults is Romiette and Julio. She also wrote an adventure trilogy for middle readers, called Ziggy and the Black Dinosaurs.
Other titles include Double Dutch, Let the Circle Be Unbroken,
and Buttered Bones, all poetry.

A resident of Cincinnati, Ms. Draper spent twenty-five years teaching English and Language Arts in the Junior High and High Schools there and in 1997 was named National Teacher of the Year. From these experiences, she has drawn material for the characters in her novels and the inspirational book of essays, Teaching from the Heart.

Many of her titles will be for sale, beginning at 6:30 p.m., and Draper's presentation will begin at 7 p.m.. After the presentation, there will be an author reception and book signing.

Her visit will be sponsored by the St. Marys City Schools, Holy Rosary School, and the Friends of the St. Marys Community Public Library.
