SMABB First-Rate in Virginia Parade
The 120-member St. Marys Memorial High School "All-Brass" Marching Band received first place in the Division V (large school) category at the 2001 Azalea Festival Parade in Richmond, Virginia, last weekend, April 21 and 22, 2001. Four other bands participated in the large school division.
The band also received an overall superior ("I") rating, garnering superior ratings in music, marching, percussion, and majorette squad. They finished in second place overall of the 11 bands from Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia participating in the parade. According to Director of Bands Dane Newlove, the experience was a very exciting one for the students and adults involved.
"This was the longest trip we have ever taken. Our students were good representatives of our community and school, and we are very proud of their first place award and superior ratings at the performance, as well as the way they handled themselves while on the trip. I am sure that they had many memorable and enjoyable experiences during the trip. I would like to thank the community of St. Marys for their continued support of our program."
"I am very proud of the band and their performance at the parade in Virginia. Our students were wonderful ambassadors of St. Marys and the band program they represent," said Mr. Michael Makley, Principal of Memorial High School.
The 143 students and adults left Thursday evening at 10 PM, and toured Colonial Williamsburg and performed at a shopping mall on Friday. Following the parade on Saturday, the students enjoyed the Kings Dominion Amusement Park, and concluded their trip with a Dinner Dance Cruise on the Annabel Lee along the James River. They arrived home at 12:30 PM on Sunday.
Thanks, Mr. Newlove
