K.C. Geiger Park Fun Saturday

ST. MARYS - Come out to K.C. Geiger Park this Saturday, June 23, for a fun-filled day at the park. The K.C. Geiger Park Improvement Committee is holding its annual Fun Day park appreciation celebration, and the public is welcome and encouraged to attend.

Organized activities include a volleyball tournament (be sure to sign up early). Sign up at the event or by contacting Monica Vanderhorst. There is a $25 entry fee for teams in grades 9-10 and 11-12 (2001-2002 school year). Tournament starts at 10: a.m. and all members of each division-winning team receives a tee-shirt. Proceeds benefit the MHS Volleyball program.

To compete in the 3-on-3 basketball tournament, contact Doug Riesen for information. Sign-ups are at the park basketball courts at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, games begin at 9:00 a.m. There is a fee of $15 per four-person team in the divisions of 5th-6th grade, 7th-8th grade, and high school age (2001-2002 school year) for both males and females. Proceeds benefit Little Riders.

Last year barbequed chicken was on the menu. This year, the K.C. Geiger Park Improvement Committee will be roasting a hog at the park. Pork-roast sandwich dinners will go for $3.00 under the big tent until 6:00 p.m., and as always the concession stands will be open for snacking all day long.

Sign up at the youth ball diamonds for the softball skills competition or the planned Jugs®-gun fastball test. The Hit, Pitch & Catch Softball Skills is for girls aged 9 and under, 10-12 or 13-17. Entry fee is $2 per try or three tries for $5: enter and compete as often as you like, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Hit a pitched ball for distance, throw for distance and accuracy and have your fielding judged. Proceeds benefit the St. Marys Girls Softball Association.

The St. Marys National Little League is holding an invitational tournament on the youth fields, and Acme Baseball is holding a tournament on the full-size diamond. Every group participating in Fun Day benefits from the proceeds of food sales, so come to the park to support these youth organizations -- or just to enjoy our national pastime without all the millionaires.

Pack up your lawn chairs and meet your friends at K.C. Geiger Park for a great Saturday in the park!
