September 18 Press Release

Holy Rosary Begins Plans for 150th Anniversary

Holy Rosary

ST. MARYS -- Holy Rosary Parish will be celebrating their 150th Anniversary in 2002 and preparations are currently underway by parishioners to mark the local Catholic faith community's milestone.

A parish planning committee has been in place for approximately a year working on activities for 2002. One of the first projects initiated by organizers was the development of a replica of the "old" church that stood at the corner of Spring and Pine Streets prior to the building of the current structure in the late 1970s.

Orders for the historical replica will be taken following Sunday Masses beginning this weekend (Sept. 15-16). A model sample of the church will be displayed. The replicas will be sold for $30 until September 25th. Following this deadline, replicas will be available for $35. Those placing their orders prior to September 25th will be able to receive their replicas before Christmas.

The committee urges parishioners and the public to place their orders as soon as possible. In addition to being displayed at Holy Rosary, replica information will also be available at Trademark Concepts, 317 W. Spring Street, and Unique Awards and Signs, 1136 W. Celina Rd., during regular business hours.

Also, under the guidance of parishioner George Neargarder, a complete and extensive history of the parish is being researched and prepared. Information and details on the book will be released later.

Other activities in the planning stages include the following:

  • Sunday, January 20: A special opening candlelight ceremony will begin the anniversary year. The program will feature a special choral and prayer program involving all of the parish's choirs.
  • Lent 2002: A four-day Parish Mission aimed at renewing and revitalizing each parishioner's faith will be held in February. More information on the schedule and the mission team will be announced later.
  • Sunday, June 9: An "Old Fashion Family Picnic" has been scheduled for the Auglaize County Fairgrounds with the goal of involving as many families as possible for the activity.
  • Sunday, September 8: Cincinnati Archbishop Daniel Pilarczyk will celebrate mass officially commemorating the 150th Anniversary. Dinner and program will follow in the Union Hall. The committee emphasizes former pastors, associates and sisters who served or came from Holy Rosary Parish are invited to attend.

Any parishioner interested in helping with these projects is asked to contact Dave Helmstetter. The planning committee meets on the first Tuesday of each month in the church basement. The next meeting will be Tuesday, October 2 at 7:30 p.m.
