ST. MARYS, OHIO - Herbert A. Kohlhorst, 82, of 1026 Edward St., St. Marys, died at 7:24 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital.
He was born on Feb. 20, 1921, in Waldron, Kan. to Leonard and Eunice (Parker) Kohlhorst.
He married Donna Geotz on Jan. 18, 1948, and she survives at their residence.
He is survived by two children, David (Patricia) Kohlhorst and Mrs. Denise (Veryl) Cisco both of St. Marys; four grandchildren, Mrs. Mary (Michael) Kreischer, Craig Cisco and Mrs. Audra (Joe) Sutton, all of St. Marys and Michael (Tina) Kohlhorst of Oahu, Hawaii; 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Marlin (Martha) Kohlhorst of St. Marys and Leonard (Rheba) Kohlhorst of Montgomery, Ala.; three sisters, Mrs. Annette (Raymond) Goetz of Spencerville, Dorothy "Maxine" Walden of Clarkston, Mich. and Mrs. Virginia (James) Wierwille of Celina.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson, Brian Cisco.
Mr. Kohlhorst was a 1940 graduate of St. Marys Memorial High School. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II as a flight engineer in the B-24 bomber. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal for his service in the offensive over Europe.
He had worked at the St. Marys Woolen Mill and Westin Paper Mill, both in St. Marys. He retired from the State of Ohio Division of Parks, where he was responsible for the dredging of Grand Lake St. Marys for many years. He was also the owner of Herbie's Lures, which he manufactured. He was an avid fisherman. He was a member of American Legion Post 323, St. Marys and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6772 in Spencerville.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at the Miller Funeral Home at 1605 Celina Road in St. Marys, with The Rev. Ed Groff officiating. Burial will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery in St. Marys.
