Oliver Hoge

NEW KNOXVILLE, OHIO - Oliver Hoge, 89, of 307 E. Bremen St. in New Knoxville, died at 8:45 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003, following an extended illness.

He was born Aug. 9, 1914, in New Knoxville, the son of Herman and Mary Sophia (Oelrich) Hoge.

He married Frieda Sue Hooper on June 23, 1940, and she survives at their residence.

He is also survived by two sons, Bruce (Donna) Hoge of New Knoxville, and Richard (Cynthia) Hoge of Whitehall; two daughters, Linda Lennington of Sunnyvale, Calif., and Sara Hochstein of Plymouth, Mich.; two sisters, Esther Dalton of Bremerton, Wash., and Ella Kuck of Sidney; and seven grandchildren, Mindi Hoge, William Hoge, Benjamin Hoge, Amber Hoge, Brian (Krista) Hoge, Bradley Hoge and Mark Hoge.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Arthur Hoge, Gustave Hoge and Joel Hoge; and five sisters, Laura Lageman, Rebecca Tschantz, Marcella Hoelscher, Bertha Roser and Olga Hardwig.

Mr. Hoge was a graduate of New Knoxville High School and Fenn College in Cleveland.

He was the retired owner of Hoge Lumber Company in New Knoxville, along with his father and three brothers. He retired in 1989 at the age of 75.

Mr. Hoge was a member of the First United Church of Christ in New Knoxville. He had taught Sunday School for many years and was a member of the choir.

He loved his grandchildren and was avidly interested in all their activities. He and his wife had traveled extensively both in the United States and abroad.

He was a member of the Idlewild Club near Grand Lake St. Marys. For many years, the Hoges spent the winter at their home in Florida, where they have many friends. He enjoyed golf when he was able to play.

Mr. Hoge was president of the Northwest Ohio Lumbermans' Association. He was a charter member and avid supporter of the American Institute of Kitchen Designers. He was a member of Mercer Lodge #121, F&AM; he was a 32nd degree mason and member of the Antioch Temple, Valley of Dayton and the Aug-Mer Shrine Club.

He was a former Boy Scout leader and had a very active troop.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003, at the First United Church of Christ in New Knoxville. The Revs. David Hunt and Jon Coddington will officiate. Burial will follow at the Pilger Ruhe Cemetery in New Knoxville.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Heritage Room of the church, where memorial donations may be directed to Shriners' Hospitals or the Radio Broadcast Fund of the church. Mercer Lodge will conduct a memorial service at 8 p.m.

Funeral arrangements are by the Vornholt-Miller Funeral Home, located at 200 W. Spring St. in New Knoxville.
