LIMA, OHIO - St. Marys junior Steven Kill ran for 186 yards, and scored three touchdowns Friday night, leading the Roughriders to a 34-14 spanking of Shawnee.
Kill sparked an impressive Roughrider ground attack that also saw Nathan Homan ramble 17 times for 146 yards, while Ty Dingledine rushed 15 times for 59 yards.
Even with the second string playing most of the second half, the Riders amassed 419 yards on the ground, as the Tribe was never really in the game.
The Roughriders got things started early, scoring 14 points in the first quarter, including a punishing opening drive.
Marching 65 yards on 10 plays, Kill capped the drive with a 14-yard sweep with 8:55 left in the opening frame. Dusty Dircksen added the point after.
Shawnee went quietly on its first possession, resulting in three plays and a kick. The Riders also sputtered on three plays. However, Shawnee fumbled the punt and Adam Doenges recovered at the St. Marys 35
From the 35, the Blue and Gold ran off 11 plays with Tyler Sampson hitting pay dirt on a two-yard quarterback sneak with 1:34 left in the quarter.
Shawnee then made things interesting, at least for the time being. On the first play of the next possession, John Long pitched a halfback pass to Martell Butler, who was stopped inside the St. Marys 10 yard line.
Butler finished things off on the next play as he busted up the middle for a six-yard TD romp, cutting the Rider lead to 14-7 with 56 seconds left in the first quarter.
The Roughriders were quick to answer with an 11-play, 52-yard drive, capped by Kill who powered over from one yard out. Dircksen missed his only kick of the game for a 20-7 lead.
St. Marys had a chance to finish the Tribe off in the first half, but sputtered losing two fumbles and collecting a basket of yellow laundry in the second quarter. The halftime score remained 20-7.
The rout was officially on the first time the Riders touched the ball in the second half. From the Shawnee 31, Kill found daylight and went 69 yards for a 27-7 lead with 8:39 left in the third quarter.
Following a Shawnee punt, St. Marys put the game on ice with a 68-yard drive, running at will. Kill had the big play in the drive as he rambled 35 yards to set up a four-yard touchdown run by Homan. Dircksen tacked on the PAT for a 34-7 lead with 4:17 left in the third quarter.
From there St. Marys coach Doug Frye emptied his bench, as the Indians were able to add a score with 1:32 left in the game. Second string quarterback David Corbin, who led the Tribe in rushing with 58 yards, scored on a 10-yard run.
Roughrider quarterback Tyler Sampson launched just two passes, completing one to Kill for 11 yards.
Shawnee compiled 156 yards on the ground, completing seven of 20 passes for 86 yards.
With the win St. Marys now controls its own destiny as Ottawa-Glandorf was knocked off by Van Wert Friday 26-7. Defiance and Celina were both winners Friday and remain atop the WBL standings.
The Riders return home next week for a Homecoming showdown with Kenton, which passed its way over Wapakoneta Friday 42-35. |
