Story by ridertown.com

SKIP BAUGHMAN STADIUM - Rushing for over 400 yards, the Roughriders sent the Shawnee Indians back to the reservation smarting from a 42-6 thumping Friday.

St. Marys remains perfect at the season’s halfway mark with a 5-0 overall record and 4-0 in the Western Buckeye League. The Indians slipped to 1-4 overall and 0-4 in the league.

Shawnee coach Dick West said he knew the key to a successful Friday in St. Marys was stopping the Roughrider running attack.

“We knew what was coming and we tried a little bit of everything,” West said. “We brought some people on stunts, looped some linebackers, gapped some people… At times we were effective, but St. Marys was just too physical for us. They wore us down and out-muscled us.”

"Shawnee's players played hard," Roughrider head coach Doug Frye said. "They took some hits when the game wasn't going their way, and they just kept coming at us."

The Riders’ “Three Horsemen” combined for over 300 yards, as fullback Ty Dingledine led the way with 127 yards on 21 carries. Nathan Homan cracked the century mark with 122 yards on 11 carries, while Stephen Kill just missed triple digits with 96 yards on 13 carries.

Mistakes proved to be deadly for Shawnee, which turned the ball over three times and had a punt blocked on their opening drive. Dustin Alexander blocked the punt, with Scott Vossler scooping up the loose ball at the Shawnee 24 yard line.

It took the Riders six plays to score from there as Dingledine took a pitch and rambled 10 yards to paydirt. Stephen Kill booted the first of his six PAT’s for a 7-0 lead with 8:48 left in the first quarter.

Shawnee answered with its best drive of the game. The Tribe ran off 17 plays, converting on several key third and fourth down situations. Starting at its own 24, Shawnee drove inside the St. Marys 10, where on fourth and seven, quarterback Keaton Hollinger’s pass was picked off by Charles Owens at the two yard line.

From there, the Riders marched 98 yards. Homan was instrumental on the drive, ripping off gains of 30, 10 and finally 39 yards for the score with 9:17 left in the half.

The Riders would score two more touchdowns late in the half. Dingledine capped off a 65-yard drive with a two-yard run, and following an interception by Isaac Chaffins, Kill rambled 28 yards for a 28-0 lead with 2:21 left in the half.

Shawnee foiled the shutout late in the half. Freshman Brian Stephenson ripped off two big runs, followed by a 20-yard touchdown pass from Hollinger to Dave Mack with 48 seconds left in the half. The try for two on the conversion failed.

“I thought the kids hung in there pretty well,” West said. “We hit with them and didn’t give up.”

The Indians tried to build on their momentum in the second half, forcing the first St. Marys punt of the game on the Riders’ opening drive of the half. St. Marys failed to move on its second possession, but Kill’s punt was fumbled and Adam Styer recoved on the St. Marys 47.

The turnover put a spark back in the Rider offense, as Dingledine scored from 12 yards out for a 35-6 lead with 3:31 left in the third quarter.

St. Marys put together another long drive on its next possession, going 91 yards in 11 plays. Homan put the game on ice with a one yard run at the 10:09 mark.

The Riders substituted the rest of the way, as 10 different players ended up with rushing stats, and four quarterbacks saw game time (Sampson, Jake Meinerding, Zach Menker and Matt Helmstetter).

"We have some competition right now among our players for playing time. By now, the Juniors are playing like Seniors and Sophomores are playing like Juniors, in terms of game experience." Frye explained. "We were fortunate tonight to be able to play some people who work hard in practice but don't always get a chance on the field during a game."

Hollinger finished with a pretty good night against the St. Marys secondary, completing 10 of 21 passes for 162 yards.

Ranked second in the state, the Rider secondary will be put to a big test next week at Kenton. The Wildcats, led by All-Ohio QB Benjamin Mauk improved to 5-0 also with a 35-21 win at Wapakoneta Friday. First place in the WBL will be on line next Friday as St. Marys and Kenton are tied for the league lead at 4-0.

"We're excited to play in a big game at this stage in the season," Frye commented. "I told the team, 'If you want to be a champion you have to step up for the big games.'"

Next week will easily qualify as the biggest game of the season so far. Kenton leads all of Ohio Division IV teams in computer points and added to that lead tonight with its win over larger school Wapakoneta. The showdown between the two WBL powers is set.
