Story by ridertown.com

KENTON, Ohio - Kenton rolled the dice and came up with first place in the Western Buckeye League Friday night at Robinson Field.

The Wildcats ruined a St. Marys comeback by putting together a 92-yard scoring drive with less than two minutes in the game. Trailing 21-14, Kenton quarterback Ben Mauk connected on a 48-yard touchdown pass to a wide open Tom Pettit with 59 seconds left to play.

Instead of going for the tie, Kenton Coach Mike Mauk elected to try for the win, and his son, Ben, executed the quarterback draw to perfection giving Kenton a 22-21 lead.

The win was sealed on the ensuing kick-off when the squibbed kick hit a St. Marys player and Kenton recovered.

The Wildcats are now in the driver's seat for the WBL title with a 5-0 record and 6-0 overall. St. Marys falls out of a first place tie and stands at 4-1, 5-1.

The Riders had battled back from a 14-7 halftime deficit, taking advantage of two interceptions and a fumble to take the 21-14 lead.

Ty Dingledine scored on a six-yard run late in the third quarter, and Stephen Kill’s kick tied the game at 14.

Kenton was thwarted on its next drive, as Adam Styer stepped in front of a Mauk pass at the Rider 18. However, Dingledine was injured on the ensuing possession, and the St. Marys offense seemed to get out of sync.

After a short punt and a 15 yard penalty the Cats were back in business at the St. Marys 18. But Kill made it back-to-back interceptions as he picked off a Mauk aerial at the one-yard line.

St. Marys was forced to punt again. But Chad Bostelman fumbled the punt and Kyle Brewer recovered for the Riders. From there the Blue and Gold “O” kicked into gear with Nathan Homan and Kill carrying the load. Homan ripped off gains of 15 and 12 yards getting inside the Kenton 10.

A procedure penalty set the Riders back, but only momentarily, as Homan busted up the middle from 12 yards out. Kill’s kick made it 21-14 with 1:59 left to play - way too much time for Mauk.

Kenton went right to work with a 20-yard completion. Mauk then threw three straight incompletions, as it appeared the Rider defense might be able to come up with a big stop. The refs, however, thought otherwise, flagging St. Marys for a questionable interference penalty, giving Kenton a first down and setting up the winning touchdown pass.

The Riders scored first, taking advantage of a huge turnover as Mauk fumbled on Kenton’s first offensive play of the game. St. Marys started its second possession on the Kenton 26-yard line, and needed just four plays to get on the scoreboard, as Tyler Sampson found the end zone on a two-yard sneak. Stephen Kill booted the PAT for a 7-0 lead with 8:31 left in the first quarter.

Mauk was able to shake off the fumble, and the Wildcats went to work on their next possession. Mauk completed his first five passes, picked up a crucial first down on a fourth down scramble, and then hit Jerrod Bostelman for a 25-yard TD pass with 5:03 left in the first quarter. Brandon Cornell’s boot tied the score.

St. Marys failed to overcome a holding penalty on its next drive, forcing a punt. The Wildcats started from their own 16 and drove inside the St. Marys 20 before turning the ball over on downs.

The Riders again failed to move the ball, punting back to the dangerous Mauk . Kenton took over at the 16 and went right to work. Mauk completed passes at will, connecting five times on the drive, finally hitting Cornell for the touchdown, giving the Cats 1 4-0 lead.

St. Marys put together a decent drive late in the half, but ran out of time as Kenton was able to hold on to the lead at intermission.

As expected, Mauk was a one-man show for the Cats, either running himself or throwing on every single Kenton offensive play. Just a junior, Mauk threw for 290 yards completing 27 of 41 passes and now has over 2000 yards passing on the season. He also ran every Kenton rushing play. It may be difficult for St. Marys fans to imagine, but Kenton played the entire game without a single handoff from quarterback.

Homan had a big night for the Riders, rolling up 190 yards on 31 carries. Kill had 78 yards on 17 carries as the Riders rolled up 290 yards, all of which came on the ground. Tyler Sampson attempted five passes but failed to complete one.

St. Marys Coach Doug Frye hasn’t been able to solve the Wildcats, who have now won four straight over St. Marys. The Riders will look to get back on the winning track next week at home against Elida. Kenton travels to Van Wert.
