BAUGHMAN STADIUM -- The St. Marys Roughriders took advantage of some early Shawnee mistakes and salted the game away with a punishing 17-play scoring drive in the fourth quarter to beat the Indians 28-12 in St. Marys' 2005 Homecoming game.

Shawnee took the opening kickoff but struggled immediately. After jumping to a false start on third and long, they snapped the ball over the punter's head on 4th-and-14 to give St. Marys its first possession on the Shawnee three yard line.

Bo Frye took it in for the touchdown, and the Roughriders had scored on their first offensive play of the game for the second consecutive week. The PAT snap was off mark, but the Riders had a quick 6-0 lead.

Kenny Bruce sent the kickoff into the end zone and the Indians started their second series on their own 20. They gained a couple of first downs on some nice running by freshman running back Brandon Stephenson, but the drive failed to reach St. Marys side of the field and on 4th-and-6 the Indians punted from their own 46 yard line.

The punt was caught at the St. Marys 25, but Shawnee was called for a fair catch violation and forced to punt again from 15 yards back. This time the ball was shanked out of bounds at the Snawnee 37 for a six-yard punt and a field position turnaround in the Riders' favor of 38 yards.

The Riders weren't able to convert, however, despite a 16-yard run by Koby Frye on a 3rd-and-15 play to keep the drive alive. An incomplete pass on 4th-and-5 turned the ball over to the Indians on downs at the 20.

After a first down, the Rider defense stepped up and sacked Shawnee quarterback Ryan Downard twice to set up a 4th-and-28 punt from the Shawnee 16 yard line. Victor Long got a piece of the kick, which then travelled only three yards. This time the Riders took advantage and Bo Frye scored his second touchdown of the night on a 15 yard run. Koby ran in the 2-point PAT and the Riders led by a 14-0 margin.

Shawnee ran the kickoff back to their 30, but were held to a three-and-out possession. Eddie Minnich fielded the punt and returned it all the way to the Shawnee 30, where the Riders mounted an 8-play drive. The penultimate play was a rollout waggle by quarterback Brett Baker, who broke a couple of Indian tackles and scrambled 13 yards for the touchdown. Doug Burke's PAT kick was on the mark and the Riders led 21-0.

The teams then traded three-and-outs but the Riders continued to dominate field position, and Victor Long's punt rolled dead at the Shawnee seven yard line. The Indians then ran 10 consecutive running plays, in the process moving across the 50 yard line for the first time in the game with approximately three minutes remaining in the half.

The Riders took the ball back on their own 34 after Victor Long sacked Downard on a 4th-and-1 play. With 1:16 left in the half, the offense moved the ball 63 yards in eight plays down to the 3 yard line, when time expired.

The teams traded possessions in the third quarter with neither able to move the ball, but Shawnee steadily gained field position thanks to a first down and a couple of short Rider punts. Taking over at the St. Marys 46 halfway through the third quarter, Downard heaved a desperation pass on 3rd-and-9 from the 45 to Blake Floyd at the goal line, who wrestled the ball away from the Rider defender for Shawnee's first score.

The PAT snap was bad, and the score stood St. Marys 21, Shawnee 6, at the 4:35 mark.

What happened next was a thing of beauty for football fans. Eddie Minnich returned Grant Brown's kick out to the St. Marys 32, where the Riders embarked on a 68-yard, 6-and-a-half-minute, 17-play drive. All on the ground, it was a machine-like performance, and after it was over the Riders led 28-6 with less than ten minutes remaining in the game.

Bo Frye scored his third TD of the game, bulling over from the 4 yard line, and Burke's PAT kick was good.

Shawnee answered by coming out passing, with freshman quarterback Zac Stover taking over for Downard, who moved to wide receiver.

Four consecutive completions moved the ball down to the St. Marys 20, where an incompletion, a 2-yard sack and a near interception by Mark Riesen left the Indians with a 4th-and-seven situation. Stover lobbed a fade pass to a well-defended Downard in the right corner of the end zone, where it appeared he and his defender caught the ball simultaneously, but Downard established possession for a touchdown at the 7:00 minute mark. The 2-point PAT attempt failed and the scoring was complete at 28-12.

Stover had one more crack at the Rider defense with 3:00 left in the game. Completions to Downard were good for two first downs, but four consecutive incompletions (including a near-pickoff by Brett Baker) turned the ball over to St. Marys, who ran out the clock to preserve the win.

Bo Frye was the workhorse, carrying the ball 31 times for 137 yards and three touchdowns. Koby Frye added 90 yards rushing on 13 carries.

St. Marys must next travel to Kenton to take on the Wildcats, 41-6 winners at Wapak tonight, in a big game with league and playoff implications.

"Shawnee has to be the best 1-6 team in the state," St. Marys coach Doug Frye said after the microphone was off after the game. CLICK HERE to listen to the rest of his post-game media comments. (4 MB)
